Utah Bill Proposes Waiting Period For Marriage
Couples who attend pre-marital counseling would get a discount on their marriage license if a Utah legislator’s proposal becomes law.
Republican Rep. Dixon Pitcher of Ogden is sponsoring the bill, which would offer incentives if couples complete approved counseling on topics including conflict management, debt and honesty.
Pitcher’s bill also proposes a three-day waiting period between the time people apply for a marriage license and the wedding. He tells ABC 4 (http://bit.ly/zG3KbA) the buffer period would force couples to think about their marriage rather than making the decision on the spur of the moment.
Critics tell ABC 4 the proposal is too intrusive.
