Tribute Band Brings Pink Floyd To Eastern Idaho

A group of local musicians is bringing Pink Floyd to eastern Idaho.

“A Few More Bricks” is a tribute to the psychadelic rock band that’s turned out classics like “Another Brick in the Wall” and “Dark Side of the Moon.”

By day, they’re regular Joe’s.

“I actually work for the (Idaho National Laboratory),” said Robert Spence, who plays guitar.

“I am an electrical engineer,” said Kevin Young, a saxophonist.

But when the lights go down, these family men take center stage, trading science for songs as a Pink Floyd tribute band.

“It’s been 30 to 40 hours a week in addition to our regular jobs,” said Spence.

It’s a labor of love, especially for Spence, who’s living out a lifelong dream.

“I’ve always been a Pink Floyd fan, but a fanatical Pink Floyd fan, goes back a decade,” said Spence.

Spence spent two years building the eight-man band, and on Saturday night, they’ll take the stage at Idaho Falls’ Colonial Theatre for their first big gig.

“It’s almost like a three-year gestation of your baby and finally your baby is being delivered and that’s kind of how I feel about it,” said Spence.

“When you start digging into details, what they make seem so effortless, so smooth, so relaxed, really takes a lot of work to achieve that feeling — their signature feeling in their music,” said Young.

The guys have studied Pink Floyd performances down to every last, dirty detail and they’re determined to replicate the special effects as much as possible.

“It is signature Pink Floyd,” said Spence, pointing out features while the stage was being set up. “We had to have a round screen to do the show properly.”

The group is teaming up with Milestone Video Productions for what they called an authentic show: from fog and lasers to a six-foot tall LED projection screen to “build the wall.”

“You think of MTV and the video music industry,” said Young. “Well, Pink Floyd was doing that live long before MTV ever came around.”

But we couldn’t give away all the secrets. Expect plenty of surprises, some of which, only the true fans will notice.

The Pink Floyd experience is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Colonial Theater in downtown Idaho Falls.

It could be a sell-out. To get tickets ahead of time, call the box office at 522-0471 or visit www.idahofallsarts.org.
