Twin Falls Schools Rely More On Kids At Crosswalks
Twin Falls school officials say they are using students as crossing guards at some elementary schools because budgets are too tight to put adult guards on the payroll.
Twin Falls School District Superintendent Wiley Dobbs says the district pays for five adult crossing guards. But that’s not enough to cover all schools in town.
Dobbs told The Times-News the district could use more, but simply can’t afford it.
So students are helping fill the gap. But Dobbs says those students aren’t given the same responsibilities or assigned busy intersections.
Idaho School Board Association Director Karen Echeverria says school administrators across the state have opted to rely more on student crossing guards amid state budget cuts in recent years.
Twin Falls schools began using adult crossing guards in the 1990s.
