Man charged in child’s brain injuries

A man is accused of inflicting injuries that resulted in serious brain damage of a young girl.

The case came to the attention of law enforcement in May of last year when Amanda Baret Sellers and Cody Sellers took a 2-year-old girl to Portneuf Medical Center after she suffered life-threatening brain injuries. She was air-lifted that same day to the Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, the Power County Sheriff’s Office said.

The girl is the daughter of Amanda. At the time of the incident, the Sellers were boyfriend and girlfriend. They have since gotten married.

The girl is living with her biological father elsewhere in eastern Idaho. She is severely brain damaged, the sheriff’s office said.

The case against Cody Sellers is a complex one, Sheriff Jim Jeffries said, so he requested the help of the Canyon County Child Fatality Team to help in the investigation. Jeffries said the expertise of that team was needed even though the victim in this case is not dead. In addition, the Power County prosecutor is getting help from the Canyon County Prosecutor’s Office.

Cody Sellers was arrested in Lincoln County, Wyo., on Nov. 18, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service, the Power County sheriff announced Thursday. He was arrested on five counts of injury to children and one count of injury to children enhancement for the actual infliction of great bodily harm.

Hewas arraigned in the Power County Magistrate Court this afternoon. He is released on his own recognizance.
