Renter’s insurance a go for college students

Going off to college can be liberating for most college students.

Independence brings new responsibilities. Some say one of those responsibilities should include getting renter’s insurance.

Parents who have homeowners insurance cover students who live on campus.

For students who live off campus, their property could be at risk of theft.

“Establishing a residence at college, their personal property isn’t automatically covered by the landlord. They need to take steps to talking to an agent and covered on things like laptops computers,” said Summer Jackman, a State Farm agent.

Jackman said bikes, books and property in cars are covered by renter’s insurance.

She also advices to keep receipts from large purchases.
