Spud cellar burns near Roberts

Crews were battling a fire at a spud cellar near Roberts on Wednesday night.

The fire broke out around 6:10 p.m. at 2750 East 100 North. Several fire crews are at the fire which is showing heavy flames and smoke.

More than 11,000 sacks of potatoes and a Spudnik piler burned in the fire, Jefferson County spokeswoman Mickey Eames said. The 400-foot cellar is considered a total loss.

The cellar caught fire after a brush fire started by workers burning weeds got out of control.

The cellar belongs to Peter Cannon and was being leased by Ralph Risenmay.

This is the second potato cellar fire this week. A fire destroyed a cellar in Madison County on Monday.
