Musician Wins Distinguished Student Award

School is over for the day, but Warren Smith and his friends are getting together to practice in a brass quartet — not because they have to, but simply because they love music.

“We just got together and decided that we should play something because we always have to do ensembles later on in the year, but we found this piece that we played and we just loved it so much we thought we just have to play it,” Smith said.

Smith is in band, pep band, jazz band and the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony. There’s a good reason he’s involved in so many groups.

“Music is my life,” Smith said. “When I go home I listen to all sorts of music, everything on the radio, and then I come here and I play music and I want to learn more and everything I can about music.”

Smith plans to get some sort of degree in music. He’s not sure exactly what he wants to do for a career but one thing is for sure –he wants it to have something involved with music.

But there are other classes he enjoys at Bonneville — government and calculus. He’s always liked math. With 3.8 GPA Smith credits music with his success in academics.

“There have been multiple studies about how music helps kids in school,” Smith said.
