Education Week at BYU-Idaho this weekend
It’s summer vacation, but school is still in session.
Brigham Young University-Idaho is holding its 18th annual Education Week on campus over the coming weekend.
They are offering just about everything classes on religion, relationships, finance but it’s not all about school. There’s plenty of activities for the whole family.
Brett Sampson, the university’s public affairs director, said, “I don’t know if Education Week is a best-kept secret.”
More than 1,600 people have registered for BYU-Idaho’s Education Week.
“But what we are seeing more is these families that are coming in. It’s a really inexpensive way for them to come together. There is a whole youth program with 600 youth participating all day, every day,” Sampson said.
While the focus is education, there are plenty of activities mixed in.
“We did the ropes course this morning , and that was really fun,” said Eliza Erickson, and attendee of the event.”We learned about facing our fears. We did some scary things but they turned out really fun.”
“Education week has grown. We have over 160 classes over the three days. We’ve grown into more than that with activities, from planetarium shows to a rope swing, swimming, roller skating. There’s a dance for families and a dance for youth Thursday . Our niche has really become one for families and individuals, not just an adult conference,” said Sampson.
Teachers from BYU-Idaho, as well as other universities, spoke on a variety of subjects to those in attendance.
But the lives of those who come are not the only ones changed.
Santiago Vaca Guzman, Education Week program assistant, said, “What I like is that I help others while I help myself to learn.”
“Every year we have Education Week I’m just overwhelmed by the difference it makes for people. I talk to individuals who come and this is their rejuvenation for the year,” Sampson said.
Registration is still open for anyone who is interested in attending. You can register in the Manwaring Center on campus or online here.
