Zebra foal born at Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park

It’s a year for birthdays and anniversaries at the zoo. The Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park is celebrating its 80th birthday! The zoo is excited to celebrate this milestone by announcing the birth of a female zebra foal, born at the zoo on Friday, July 17.

“We are thrilled to have another addition to our zebra herd,” says Interim Zoo Superintendent, Linda Beard. “This is the third baby born to our zebra mare, and the 18th foal fathered by our 24-year-old zebra stallion. What better way to celebrate the zoo’s 80th birthday than with a new animal birth!”

In 1934, the city of Idaho Falls purchased land in Tautphaus Park, then called “City Park,” and in 1935 the first zoo animals were brought to the park. Log buildings were erected throughout the park and financed as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. Some of these buildings can still be seen on zoo grounds and now serve as an education center and a storage barn.

In 1998, Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park became the first zoo in Idaho to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
