Madison County sees string of car thefts

UPDATE: A second vehicle, reported stolen from the Rexburg area over the weekend, was recovered in Idaho Falls Wednesday night.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said two suspects are in custody as the multi-agency investigation continues.

Original Story:

Madison County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a string of car thefts, after two cars were stolen over the weekend. At the same time, several other cars were illegally entered.

The series of incidents happened just outside Rexburg City limits south of town. So far one car has been found and returned to it’s owner, but the second is still missing.

During their investigation, deputies say they found a common theme between all the burglaries. Both stolen vehicles had their keys left inside, and many of the illegally entered cars were left unlocked. Law enforcement likes to call these crimes of convenience.

“It’s a growing community, you can’t leave your car unlocked anymore,” said Detective John Virgin with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. “You need to lock your vehicles. Take the keys out of them. Take the opportunity away from people.”

Deputies also said people need to keep valuables hidden from prying eyes. “If they do see stuff of value in the car, than they could decide to break your window and get in,” said Virgin.
