We all scream for ice cream: Farr’s adds new flavors

Roy Farr opened the company’s first store on Broadway Street in Idaho Falls. It is a four generation business that has been passed down.

One of the first flavors was lemon custard, which has been brought back to the new line.

The new product has a higher butterfat content of 14 percent to 15 percent, along with richer flavors. The line has been in the works for two years.

The formulas for the ice cream, along with the packaging had to be just right, according to Farr’s Candy Co. owner Kevin Call.

“The flavors are indicative of things that we have in our area, such as ‘Yellowstone Mudslide,’ “Call said.

The huckleberry flavor contains natural huckleberries that are picked locally from the basin area around Driggs,Call said.

Some of the ingredients for other flavors are imported from other states, “Hawaiian Vanilla” is made from vanilla beans from Hawaii.

“I lived in Hawaii for a couple of years, and on the big island the Kona side of the island is the only place in the United States that grows vanilla beans. We are one of two ice cream companies in the U.S to actually use Hawaiian beans,” Call said.

“The names of the ice creams represent who we are regionally and locally.”

There are 12 new flavors to choose from.

“This is my son Bill’s product line. He’s done a great job with it. Now the trick is to get it transferred into stores,” Call said.

The ice cream is making its way into local grocery stores, including Broulims Fresh Foods and WinCo.

The retail price depends on the store and any promotions. You can pick up a quart of Farr’s ice cream at Broulims for $5.29.
