Locking down tuition and saving money at ISU

There’s good news for some freshmen at Idaho State University in Pocatello. It’s called the “Tuition Lock Pilot Program.” It goes into effect in two weeks when school starts. Which is designed to give freshmen a chance to keep their tuition totals predictable, and not to mention, the same each year for four years.

The state board of education meeting was today at the student union at ISU. Instead of giving their annual report. They gave a tour around campus to state board members. Speaker of the State Board, Blake Youde was able to spare a few minutes and talk about the program further.

“The tuition rate they pay for their first semester is the tuition they’ll pay their four years of attending ISU. Assuming, they stay in good academic standing,” said Youde.

He says an incoming freshman at ISU will be spending $3,478 per semester. Multiply that by two, for two semesters in a year, and that equals $6,956. Which is the locked price per year for 4 years.

It’s can be a comfortable feeling knowing only a certain price will be coming out of your wallet every year. But only if you’re an Idaho resident. That’s one of the many requirements for the program. http://http://www.isu.edu/tuitionlock/

Regardless of the lockdown on tuition, students like Peter Eckert says tuition is still too high. He says it should be lowered, not locked.

“It’s probably better than a private school, but I still think it’s too much,” said Eckert.

Eckert says universities and colleges in the U.S. have really gone sky high with tuition and fees. He says college in Europe is only $400 for the whole year.
