Idaho school district settles ACLU lawsuit

An Idaho school district has settled a lawsuit by agreeing to change policies that a former student called discriminatory.

The Times-News reports in a story on Thursday that the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho sued the Cassia County School District on behalf of Sierra Norman this spring.

According to an ACLU of Idaho news release, the district has agreed to change its policies to allow students taking online, college credit or religious classes to be involved in school activities on an equal basis.

Declo High School officials told Norman she could not run for student body president in 2014 because she took too many dual-credit classes. Norman and her mother filed a complaint, saying the fact that she is female and not Mormon played a role in the school’s decision.

The school district didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.
