Utility payment scam targets Idaho Falls business

A number of businesses called Idaho Falls’ utility office Monday to complain about phone calls demanding money for unpaid fees.

Idaho Falls Police said the calls were part of a utility scam that is circulating in the area.

They said the city does not demand utility payments over the phone. In fact, billing is handled by the City Utilities Office and they do not accept payments over the phone.

Police advise that if a caller demands payment with a prepaid credit card, demands payment over the phone, or cannot offer payment options, it is a scam.

If you have any doubts, hang up and call the utilities office directly at (208) 612-8280 or (208) 612-8144.

As always, do not provide any personal or financial information over the phone if you did not initiate the call.
