Bonneville High School theater closed for safety reasons

Theater production and plays at Bonneville High School are shut down temporarily.

The high school’s “Little Theater” was closed after the flying system, which helps move the curtains and sets, was not deemed safe for use.

The district is waiting for bids to make the repairs, which will be paid for using emergency funds. One of the school’s four plays has been cancelled, but the district hopes that’s the only one.

The theater was closed after the new drama teacher noticed some of the rigging was outdated. After inspections, it was decided they needed to update the fire curtain and improve the overhead lighting system as well.

While some people are upset, the district says it’s a safety issue.

“The students, the patrons, anybody that even comes in there,” John Pymm, D93 Director of Facilities and Operations, said. “We don’t want any of those things falling down or those rigging systems working incorrectly, not breaking properly. Any of those things that could cause us a problem with people’s safety, we want to absolutely have them fixed.”
