Riverfest brings big business to local vendors

Fourth of July events such as Riverfest in Idaho Falls can be a huge boost for local businesses.

Thousands of people packed the Snake River Landing on the Fourth of July for a variety of fun activities. Many of those included buying food and drinks from local vendors. The holiday brings in huge profits for them.

“The Fourth of July is our biggest day of the whole year,” said Richard Johnson, owner of Mexican Crazy Corn. “We have two roasters for the Mexican Crazy Corn and with that it’s in high demand. And obviously, you saw the lines, it’s one of those things you try to vend and cook the corn as fast as you can.”

The same goes for non-food vendors as well. People could shop for a variety of items such as bags, t-shirts and even some face-painting.

“Fourth of July for a face painter is the second face-painting holiday in the year,” said Laura Pennock, owner of a face-painting booth. “Halloween is first and then after Halloween, everybody wants their face painted on the Fourth of July.”

Festivals such as Riverfest also offer many benefits for community members. They are a chance to try a range of different foods and items they may not have in the past.

“The important thing is, I think, is to offer a wide selection and variety and diversity that peaks people’s interest,” Johnson said. “And hey, it’s something they can come and get. And the Fourth of July, I think, is kind of the beginning of summer. It kicks it off and away you go.”

Idaho Falls Police estimate there were about 20 percent more people in attendance for the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration Fireworks this year compared to last year.
