DMV Administrator proposes solution for driver’s license service outages

UPDATE 4:55 p.m. ITD Division of Motor Vehicles Administrator Alberto Gonzalez has released a statement about recent outages affecting the driver’s license services in Idaho.

“This level of service affecting citizens, sheriffs and the Idaho Transportation Department is unacceptable. ITD has been continuing to work with our vendor as they work toward a solution, but outages have increased and even spread to other states. We need an Idaho solution.

ITD’s solution is to eliminate the dependency on the real time communication with our vendor’s software. ITD plans to implement the solution statewide by Thursday. It would allow county staff to input customer information in person without having to communicate in real time with our vendor. It will be stored on a server. At the end of the day, information would be provided to the vendor.

We believe this will allow county and ITD staff to provide a level of service our citizens and partners deserve.

To our partners at the county sheriff offices: We appreciate and share your frustration and concerns and are committed to fixing these problems. We are ready to meet with sheriffs and partners on solutions that will help us move forward.”

UPDATE 12:00 p.m.: Due to ongoing outages related to the Division of Motor Vehicle’s software vendor that issues driver’s licenses, the Idaho Transportation Department is recommending sheriff’s offices close their doors while troubleshooting continues.

The computer system is down at this time and unable to allow our Deputies in the Driver’s License Office to issue any Driver’s License or ID Card at this time.

ITD says to check with your local sheriff’s office to see if they decided to close.

The Bonneville County Driver’s License office is still open and able to accept applications for Concealed Weapons Permits as well as changes or renewals for the Sex Offender Registry.

Because Concealed Weapons Permits are tied to the photo portion of the Driver’s License system, the sheriff’s office is unable to issue approved permits until it is up and running again, but as previously stated we can still accept the applications for Concealed Weapons Permits.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office reminds you these issues are beyond the control of our Deputies in the Driver’s License Office itself.

This computer system outage is only affecting the Driver’s License division of the Sheriff’s Office at this time and is not causing issues with the Motor Vehicle division of the Bonneville County Assessor’s Office.

New registration and license plate renewals for vehicles have not been affected in Bonneville County today and the Motor Vehicle’s office is still operating as usual.

UPDATE 8/28/18 8:00 a.m.: The Idaho Transportation Department said the driver’s license issues appear to be restored.

ITD tweeted Tuesday Morning, “As of 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 – Normal transactions are resuming at county offices – licensing vendor systems appear to be working normally.”

ORIGINAL:

The Idaho Transportation Department Driver’s License computers are not working Monday.

Officials are working to troubleshoot the issue but say there is no estimated time for when the issue will be fixed.

ITD says this outage is unrelated to the recent software upgrades.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office warns the process to renew a Driver’s License or ID Card or obtain any kind of Idaho Driver’s License or permit may be considerably slower.

This issue is beyond the control of the sheriff’s office deputies in the Driver’s License Office; however, they are trying to help in these transactions as best they can as the system allows them access.
