Jefferson board OKs language program

The Jefferson School Board in Rigby has approved a plan implementing a new world language program.

Under the recommendation, the immersion program will feature Spanish at Jefferson Elementary and Chinese at South Fork Elementary.

Superintendent Dr. Ron Tolman said the district’s maintenance and operation budget could not be used to start the program. During a recent public meeting, parents pledged $30,000 to meet that expense.

But school officials said they haven’t heard back from all of those parents.

Plans for a lottery to determine which students would be selected for the new classes was postponed until all those parents who pledged were contacted.
