Teen arrested in fatal West Valley shooting

West Valley City police have arrested a teenage suspect in the fatal shooting of a man after an argument that began on a local bus.

Police say 22-year-old Marco Cardenas of West Valley City was hospitalized with gunshot wounds in the shooting about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku says Cardenas and the suspect in custody on Thursday reportedly agreed to get off the UTA bus at 3500 South and 5600 West to continue some sort of verbal altercation that started on the bus during Wednesday’s evening commute.

Witnesses say Cardenas punched the teen before the youth pulled a gun and fired multiple shots, striking Cardenas at least once.

The suspect fled but a passerby spotted him hiding behind a store and alerted police.
