Amateur Radio “Field Day” held in Shelley

The Eagle Rock Amateur Radio Club held its annual “Field Day” at Taylor Park in Shelley on Saturday.

Ham radios are a hobby with a purpose.

Lorie Harvey says, “Ham radios has had a history of helping during all disasters around the world. When all other communications go down, hams go up.”

So why is the FCC allowing so many people to become amateur operators?

“The FCC gives us frequency allocations because of the emergency capability. We know our equipment, we know what it can do” says Repeater Trustee, Alan Fielding

This is why “Field Day” is so important.

“We’ve got clubs around the county and other countries that have set up in parks and colleges. Wherever they want to set up radios to bring in the public and introduce them to radio.” Harvey said.

Not only is this an opportunity to bring more people into the hobby, but also to allow ham operators to practice on different types of equipment and learn from each other.

“We all have different lives and interests… but this brings us together,” said club member, David Warden.

The radio and makes it possible to contact people all over the world.

Warden continued, “It’s fun to meet people and get to know their culture. You make lots of friends.”
