Rexburg cake boss wins with patriotic cake

A Rexburg woman baked and designed a prize-winning cake, her inspiration coming from America’s rich history, the 2016 presidential election and god.

Constance Haworth is a self taught home baker. She’s been baking cupcakes and cakes for years.

But never in her wildest dreams did she think she would create a patriotic master piece that would win her $1,000 and bragging rights.

“I took first place in the special occasion, took grand champion and than I took best of show over the entire sugar art show,” Haworth said.

She entered her cake in the Eastern Idaho State Fair hoping to place third but was surprised to walk away with a check and a trophy.

The Rexburg Cake owner bakes at her home and posts her creations on her Facebook site.

The cake she designed took more than 100 hours to make. It was all hand painted. It’s a four tier cake with an American flag draped on one side.

It outlines historical moments such as the first man walking on the moon, President John F. Kennedy carefully crafted and painted, and Dr. Martin Luther King with his famous quote, “I have a Dream.”

The cake also has a blank tier that reads 2016-2024 A decade of….? Representing the coming election.

“And so I was hoping that as people looked at this cake that they would kind of get some of the feelings I was able to get from as I sat in my cake room. And I sculpted Iwo Jima or as I painted D-Day. Or I did the Jewish star. My heart was touched and kind of turned,” Haworth.

Haworth also said “No matter what way the elections goes she still has hope.”

“In every single decade, and that was the fun thing in a show you always get to give it a title or a name. And I titled the cake in ‘In God We Trust’ because that’s who we’ve trusted in every decade of our history and that’s who still hold his nation in his hands.”

Her children are carrying on the family cake making tradition. Two of her kids also placed in the cake baking contest at the East Idaho State Fair.

“We are a cake family,” Haworth said.
