Man taken to hospital after leading police on chase, crashing into canal

A man was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center after crashing his pickup truck into an interstate canal following a police chase Wednesday evening.

Idaho Falls police say they attempted to pull the truck over on 17th Street for driving without headlights when the suspect took off towards Interstate 15. Police say the suspect took the on-ramp headed south on Interstate 15, turned around and heading back north.

According to police, they attempted to use spike sticks but were unsuccessful. An Idaho Falls police sergeant said he believed the suspect knew the strips were deployed and attempted to avoid them by driving in the median before crashing into the canal just south of the Sunnyside Road exit, not knowing the canal was there.

The suspect was not hurt, according to police, but he was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

His name has not been released. Police said he will face charges.
