1 hospitalized after train vs. semi accident
ROBERTS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - UPDATE 7:40 p.m. Idaho State Police reports the crash happened westbound SH-48 near milepost 1, in Roberts around 3:46 p.m. Tuesday.
ISP said Celestino Trejo Moreno, 57, of Idaho Falls, was driving westbound on SH-48 in a 1998 Peterbilt semi pulling a single trailer when his vehicle was struck by a Union Pacific train traveling southbound, as he was crossing the railroad tracks.
The semi was pushed approximately 1300 feet south of the intersection.
A ground ambulance transported Trejo Moreno to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
UPDATE 5:00 p.m. A train crashed into a semi-truck on the tracks in the Roberts area Tuesday afternoon.
It carried the truck a good distance before finally coming to a stop.
The Roberts Fire District went to the crash and pulled the semi driver out.
Central Fire District and Jefferson County Fire assisted in with the accident.
Officials say he had a gash on his head and a few scrapes and was taken to the hospital because he was complaining of back pain.
No word if he has any other injuries.
About 2,500 to 3,000 gallons of diesel were spilled, and since the spill is all on Union Pacific property, the company is calling out its own hazmat team. They are coming from the Salt Lake area, and it will take them at least three hours to get here.
There are no road closures on Highway 48 at this time.
