Proposed Bill Would Ban Teen Tanning

Some state legislators are trying to keep teenagers away from tanning beds.

A proposed bill would put in a place a ban on anyone less than 18-years-old using a tanning bed.

Supporters of the age limit said the quest for a healthy glow is anything but healthy.

In the bill’s statement of purpose, Representative John Rusche said the use of tanning beds by minors has led to an epidemic of skin cancer.

Local tanning salon owners said there’s no epidemic and it’s rare for them to see kids come into their shops.

“We cater to a clientele that’s a little more mature. We don’t get many kids that are 18 or under in here and so it’s not really a problem for us. I just don’t think it’s really a problem,? Mediteranean Sun owner Katrina Knowlton said.

The proposed bill would carry a $500 fine for violating the ban.
