Simplot Games Host New Events

The events that make up the core of the Simplot Games don’t see much change, but the organizers do try to bring in a little something new every year.

“We’ve been doing this for 34 years. It’s popular, everybody loves it, so we just want to keep it fresh and keep it new. so we bring some new things in,? Simplot Games Executive Director Rebecca Anderson said.

The games are playing host to a few new events, including the weighted shoulder throw.

“It’s designed for javelin throwers who cannot compete indoors because there’s just not enough room,? Anderson said.

Anderson hopes it brings in javelin competitors from other states, without the need to throw a sharp object in a crowded arena.

A new exhibition event, named the Devil’s Mile was held at the games.

“Every lap the last man is pulled. So it’s strategy, it’s athletic, and every lap you do you get more money, so it’s just going to be fun to watch,? Anderson said.

It’s the first time the Simplot Games are offering a cash prize, but the Devil’s Mile and its prize money aren’t for the amateur athletes.

“No, these are professional runners ? no high school, no college,? Anderson said.

Organizers of the event said the Simplot Games are special because they’re wide open to any high school athlete, from the brand-new beginner to the rising star destined for Olympic fame.

“This is like, a lot more competitive than high school track meets. There’s some really good athletes here, and it’s fun to watch them and race against them,? Bear Lake athlete Shania Bateman said.
