Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Device Found In Apartment

The Idaho Falls bomb squad is dissecting a possible bomb to find out exactly what it is.

A painter in Blackfoot found a suspicious device on Tuesday night while he was working in an apartment complex on Walker and Broadway. The owner has been renovating the complex.

The apartment where the device was found had been vacant for up to a year. Police are tracking down the former residents of the apartment or anyone who had access to it during that time, Blackfoot Police Capt. Kurt Asmus said.

Blackfoot Police Chief Dave Moore said it looked like a modified mortar for a fireworks tube.

Because of the modified state, Moore called in the bomb squad, which took the device away and secured it. Asmus said the squad is trying to determine whether the bomb was dangerous.

Two apartments were evacuated while the bomb squad retrieved the device.
