Brothers Arrested After Standoff
Jason Wiberg, a fugitive from Utah, was captured after a standoff in Lava Hot Springs.
Wiberg was on parole for bank robbery, and was wanted on aggravated assault. The Bannock County Sheriff’s Office said Wiberg led Utah police on a 100 mph high-speed chase when they attempted to arrest him.
Wiberg, a survivalist, went into Cache Valley wilderness on his own.
When that happened, U.S. Marshals asked the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office to interview Wiberg’s brother in Lava Hot Springs, Jared Wiberg, on Tuesday night. Deputies said the interview was a little off. They said they suspected Jason was in the house and even saw him peeking out of a window.
A standoff ensued. After hours of negotiation and SWAT team involvement, Jason came out of the house early Wednesday morning, yelling and swearing, telling the police to shoot him. A deputy sneaked up behind him and Tasered him.
Jared’s wife, Beth Adams, said Jared wasn’t trying to help his brother escape, but was trying to save his brothers life.
She said Jason planned to get the police to shoot and kill him, rather than going back to jail, and Jared was trying to talk him out of it.
Jason was extradited back to Utah.
Jared is in Bannock County Jail facing a felony charge of harboring a fugitive.
