Puppy Recovering After Being Shot

It’s an incident that many are considering to be a miracle. A border collie puppy is safe and healthy after being shot multiple times and left to die.

When Blackfoot Animal Clinic veterinarian Dr. Tony Parsons saw this 4-month-old border collie in his clinic, he said he didn’t expect the puppy to be the victim of a target practice.

“A .22 caliber … we don’t know if it was a handgun or a rifle,” said Parsons. “One was under the skin and in her back, the other was in her leg and it shattered her tibia bone so that’s why she had the broken leg.”

Parsons says a local resident by the name of Leslie Schwindt found the puppy, who she later named “Angel,” lying in a ditch.

After a diagnosis, Angel had to have her left rear leg amputated due to the injuries she sustained. Other than that, she’s doing just fine. Parsons said the credit for Angel’s survival goes to Schwindt.

“This story is the epitome, for me, for the good and bad in people,” said Parsons. “You saw people that were willing to do things for an animal they had never met and people who shoot at a little puppy.”

Angel wasn’t the only border collie puppy found in this state. Parsons said two other puppies from Angel’s same litter had been found with similar injuries.

Bingham County Sheriff’s officials say they continue to investigate.
