Celebrating Memorial Day

Memorial Day is one of the most anticipated days of the year, because it marks the start of summer. Monday was no exception.

The overcast conditions didn’t put much of a damper on anyone’s holiday.

Despite their destinations, Local News 8’s Jessica Crandall met up with a lot of people enjoying this Monday off in the best way possible — together.

Rexburg Rapids is where Justine Kohn and Jahkylee Wells hung out with the kids. They enjoyed swimming and the little amount of sun.

“It was cold as soon as you stepped out of the pool, but it was fun,” said Kohn.

That was just the beginning of their plans.

“Later we’re going to probably have a fire pit and we have a friend who’s going to set off some fireworks,” said Kohn.

Over at Walmart in Rexburg, Myriah Pope and Makinzie Johnson grabbed a few things before swimming at Green Canyon.

They said the best part of Memorial Day is the food.

Americans love the holiday because of the barbecues and the swimming, but how many really remember what it’s all about?

“I think about them. My grandpa is a Marine so he always reminds us to write letters and stuff,” said Pope.

“I think about my husband. He’s in the national guard and away from me. It’s hard. I have three kids, but I’m proud of what he’s decided to do,” said Kohn.

Rexburg Rapids Water Park opened for the season Monday. Employees said only about 20 patrons came to swim, which is not surprising considering the weather.
