Great Neighbors: Bonneville Youth Development Council

A local youth service group is helping the community.

The old Peaches Pet store on Yellowstone in Idaho Falls is being remodeled by Habitat for Humanity into a home improvement thrift store. The Bonneville Youth Development Council, always looking for ways to serve, is helping Habitat for Humanity.

BYDC is a group of Bonneville county youth ages 12 to 18 that want to get involved in service in the community. They meet once a week to plan service projects, social activities and other events.

“Just for the good of the community – just to make everything better and surround ourselves with positive influences,” Nick Chaffin says.

These teens answered the need, and with brooms and shovels and brutestrength as they tackled the project. This is the same group that gives trapped sober presentations at local schools – encouraging kids to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

“We represent the youth in our community that are drug free and are alcohol free. We want to show the community that not all teens do that kind of stuff and we want to encourage other teens not to,” Rebecca Nelson says.

There was an excitement and energy in the air — plenty of smiles and laughs even though the work was hard. The teens found it rewarding.

“It just makes you feel really good inside just knowing that you’re helping out such a great cause like Habitat for Humanity,” Nick Chaffin says.
