Blackfoot youth celebrates MLK Day
Children in Blackfoot celebrated friendship and peace, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The event, held at the Blackfoot Community Center, was sponsored by AmeriCorps and Modern Woodmen Youth Service Clubs.
All who attended had the chance to learn more about the civil rights movement through games, crafts and activities.
“The adults, they might take it a little more seriously,” said site supervisor Madalyn Smith. “I think it’s fun for the kids to learn it in a way that’s exciting for them.”
Kids were quizzed on black history by creating art, and even cookies, with a civil rights theme. AmeriCorp team leader Melissa Minmill said that’s the way it should be.
“We love to be able to teach different things through hands-on activities, so that way it engages, and makes it tons and tons of fun,” said Winmill.
Sixth-grader Joseph Hansen was one of the many kids in attendance to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
“I just wanted to learn a little more about what this was and why he did this,” said Hansen. “I didn’t know much about him before I came.”
For learning at each of the activity stations the kids earned tickets redeemable for prizes. A raffle was also available, thanks to donations from local businesses.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do it without them and we’re just very, very thankful for their help and participation so we can do this,” said Winmill.
