INL dedicates new laboratory

The Idaho National Lab dedicated its new Energy Innovation Laboratory Tuesday.

The 148,000 square-foot building will provide three stories of modern laboratory space as well as state-of-the-art equipment and resources. The lab will enable researchers to pursue solutions to national energy challenges, specifically the cellulosic fuels from switch grass and other plant life, the next generation of battery testing, and the separation of nuclear materials.

With the continued support of the Department of Energy, the lab would be a major resource for eastern Idaho’s business sector as the region continues its focus on economic growth.

“We really want this facility to be open for business,” said DOE Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson. “Over the next three years, we want to see twice as many companies coming in here to help them increase their competitiveness, so they can beat their overseas competitors and create great jobs here in the United States.”

The INL said this new facility demonstrates its commitment to closer university and industry partnerships.
