Fly-fishing expo a hit in Idaho Falls
Eastern Idaho is home to some of the best fly-fishing in the world, and that is why, the east Idaho Fly Fishing Expo is a hit every year.
“Fly-fishing has a soothing and calming effect. It is a fun thing to get outside and do. It is also a great way to spend time with family and friends,” said Alex Assante, a fly fisherman.
This weekend people have a chance to learn the newest fly-tying techniques from some of the best experts in the nation. There are also many activities for kids.
“My favorite river to fish in is the Henry’s Fork. The river has great cutthroats,” said Assante.
Even though fly-fishing has been long regarded as a male-dominant sport, Dorothy Zinky is a regular at the event. She drives from northern California to Idaho Falls every year.
“When I first started I went to places and I would be the only woman there, and it was fine as long as the people were friendly. You would go to some places where there were men who wanted to bond with men and not women,” said Zinky.
Zinky said it is different now because more women are taking up fly-fishing. She also said the expo offers an inviting environment because of its workshops for women. The fly-tying lessons give ladies the chance to learn the basics.
Over the past two decades the expo has raised thousands of dollars for fishing preservation. The expo will also be held Saturday at the Shilo Inn in Idaho Falls. For more information, click here, http://srcexpo.com/.
