Fire Destroys Building in Jefferson Co.

The Roberts Idaho Fire District said a fast moving fire Friday night completely destroyed a potato seed treatment building in Jefferson County.

Captain Jared White said when firefighters arrived on scene the entire building was engulfed in flames. White said employees of the potato seed company were standing outside upon arrival. The fire happened on 2800 east 100 north around 6:20 p.m. Crews did not leave the scene until after midnight.

“The flames never really got that high. Right at the beginning, they sprung up maybe 10 feet or so, but after that, the fire department was here,” said Andrew Mickelsen, who was across the street when the fire broke out.

White said at this time there are no injuries to employees or firefighters. The Roberts Idaho Fire District had assistance from fire personnel in Menan and Ucon. Crews do not know how the fire started. There will be an investigation to determine the cause.

Mickelsen said the building contained small amounts of a number of chemicals used to treat seeds, but that he didn’t think they posed any risk to responders.

Mickelsen said what remains of the structure will likely be demolished.
