Idaho Falls names interim fire chief

A driver-operator for the Idaho Falls Fire Department has been named interim fire chief. Duane Nelson will replace Chief Dean Ellis, who retired May 16.

The Idaho Falls City Council confirmed Mayor Rebecca Casper’s appointment Thursday night.

Nelson began his fire service career with the Idaho National Guard in 1991. He joined the Idaho Falls Fire Department in 1997. Nelson was promoted to Inspector in the Fire Prevention Bureau in 2007. He received his AAS Fire Service Technology Degree from Eastern Idaho Technical College in 2009 and a BS Degree in Fire Service Administration from Idaho State University in 2012.

Ellis accepted a position as a planner/manager for fire service training at EITC.

Nelson will serve as interim chief for two or three months while the mayor’s office conducts a search for a full time appointment.
