Candles blamed for apartment fire

Unattended candles were the cause of an Idaho Falls apartment fire Monday, fire officials said.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department was called to 2001 W. Broadway Apt. 10 at 7:45 p.m. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to neighboring apartments. Firefighters said the fire was caused by candles placed near flammable materials.

Damage was estimated at $20,000.

Investigators said a smoke detector had been taken down from its location in the kitchen because it would frequently go off while the occupant was cooking.
