Local songwriter performs at Memorial Day closing ceremonies

When local musician Colter Wilson learned how many of his friends and colleagues choose not to vote, he decided Memorial Day weekend would be the perfect opportunity to get a new message out.

On Monday’s Field of Heroes closing ceremonies, after the POW-MIA thunder run bikers finally rolled back in for the last time of the year, he showed everyone how he is helping to support the troops through music.

“It’s called ‘Grandfathered In’ and I wrote it after a service member died who also happened to be a friend of mine,” Wilson said. “On the other side of the spectrum, I had friends who said they weren’t going to vote in the election and that made me reflect on both of my grandfathers who fought in WWII, one of whom lied about his age. So, I started thinking that was the true American spirit.”

Wilson said every time the song is downloaded, the Sandpiper restaurant has agreed to donate one dollar to The Wounded Warrior Project.
