Pups gear up for annual dog show
The Eastern Idaho Spring Classic Dog Show was under way Friday. The show is hosted every year by the Pocatello and Eagle Rock Kennel Clubs at the East Idaho State Fairgrounds in Blackfoot.
This year the show had approximately 1,400 entries, with over 2,000 participants. The show only allows for purebred dogs. They are judged on their obedience, agility and rally skills.
“We’re considered one of the premier circuits in the west to go on,” said show chairman Tim Reese. “We have entries from California, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.”
With all the attention the event gets, Reese said the event is more than just a show, it’s an asset to the region’s profitability.
“We did a study and it showed that a show of 750 dogs, with all the exhibitors it brings, will benefit a community between $500,000 and $600,000,” he said.
This year’s show exceeded 1,400 dogs, which could equate to about $800,000 in profits for the surrounding community.
Pocatello club members will showcase their dogs on June 12 and 13. Eagle Rock club members will showcase their dogs from June 14 and 15. All showings are open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Unregistered dogs are not allowed.
