Flooding means increased risk for tetanus

As Rexburg dried out after Tuesday’s flash flooding, health officials warned the danger wasn’t over.

Exposing an open wound to floodwater can increase the risk of tetanus, Eastern Idaho Public Health District said on Wednesday. The health district is recommending that people in Rexburg check their vaccine records to see if they are up to date.

If you need a tetanus shot, contact your health care provider or the health district. If you don’t know if you are current on this vaccine, health officials recommend you err on the side of caution and get one.

In addition, the health district said flooding may cause issues with sewage systems, which can also be hazardous. Affected homeowners should contact local cleaning and restoration companies to help with cleanup.
