An Idaho Falls businessman announced his candidacy for Idaho Republican Party chairman Wednesday.

Steve Yates’ announcement comes after controversy surrounding the state GOP that began after its party convention failed to choose a chair.

Although Barry Peterson still claims the seat, some disagree.

Yates said three themes will be a guide for his candidacy: focus forward, linking grassroots and governance, and “coming home.”

From 2001 to 2005, he was deputy assistant to then-Vice President Dick Cheney for National Security Affairs.

Yates started his own business, D.C. International Advisory, before moving his company to Idaho Falls in 2011.
