Teton Geotourism Center grand opening set for Friday

The Teton Geotourism Center in Driggs will open its doors to locals and tourists Friday at 2 p.m.

The idea of the TGC was born by the National Geographic Society’s push for geotourism. Geotourism is defined as tourism that “sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place — its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.”

David Work, a TGC board member, hopes it will draw people to the West side of the Tetons.

“We hope that more people will come and stop to see what the opportunities are here in both recreation, business and restaurants,” said Work.

The center uses interactive exhibits to highlight the landscape, wildlife, culture, history and recreation of the valley, year-round. Exhibit Coordinator Cynthia Rose says it was inspired and built by the communities on the Teton Scenic Byway.

“It goes from Ashton to Swan Valley, so it’s those two communities, Driggs, Victor and Tetonia,” said Rose.

While there’s plenty to be done before Friday, Work said people are already trying to get in.

“People are looking in the windows, reading the signs and saying ‘can we come in?'” said Work.

Once the center is open, the public will be able to find information 24/7, as a portion of the center will never lock its doors.

“We have public restrooms, free Wi-Fi and a lot of information,” said Rose. “Brochures, maps and things to help them plan their visit.”

During business hours, the center will be staffed to help guide visitors.

Friday’s grand opening includes activities and tours from 2-5 p.m., as well as a ribbon-cutting at 3 p.m.
