Sen. Crapo speaks about letter to Iran
Sen. Mike Crapo was in Eastern Idaho Friday.
We asked the senator about that letter to Iran about nuclear negotiations with the U.S.
It’s basically a warning to Iranian leaders from Congress.
GOP senators – including Crapo- signed the letter saying if Iran agrees to a nuclear treaty with the Obama administration, it has to be approved by two thirds of the senate.
It also warns the next president can always revoke the treaty.
The letter has been getting a lot heat. Crapo said he was surprised by the reactions. He said this is part of Congress’ job.
“We are very concerned that the president is moving dangerously close to entering an agreement with an enemy of ours that will essentially allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. The president says he’s not doing so, but the fact is that we are very concerned that what he appears to be doing is exactly that. We are making it very clear that we as Congress will not stand for that,” he said.
Crapo said Congress believes the president should handle this as a treaty and let Congress ratify it. He also said Congress has a meaningful role in foreign policy.
