Man shot and killed by Bonneville County deputy

Authorities have released the name of the man shot and killed by a Bonneville County deputy on Monday.

Jefferson County Sheriff Blair Olsen said Tuesday the man was Tyrell J. Larsen, 31, of Jefferson County.

According to court records, Larsen was a convicted felon with drug, weapons, traffic, and hunting violations.

Olsen said the pursuit began in Bonneville County when the deputy tried pulling Larsen over on East River Road for a traffic violation.

Larsen cut his lights to get away from the deputy, and in Jefferson County, he turned his 2012 Chevrolet pickup into a private drive East 100 North and hit a four-foot-thick concrete foundation around 11:45 p.m.

When the deputy approached the pickup to see if Larsen was OK, Larsen drew a .22-caliber rifle, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy told Larsen repeatedly to drop the weapon, but Larsen refused.

That’s when the deputy shot Larsen, said Olsen, and when Jefferson County deputies arrived at the crash.

“To my knowledge, the nonlethal methods (used by the Bonneville County deputy) were giving (Larsen) a number of opportunities to lower his weapon and surrender himself,” said Olsen.

Medical personnel provided first aid at the scene. The suspect was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Southeast Idaho Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting. An autopsy will be performed on Larsen as part of the investigation, Olsen said.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was not hurt and is “OK considering the circumstances,” said Olsen.
