Possible Compher defense: Someone else killed Nori Jones
In the third day of a preliminary hearing for a man accused of killing a Pocatello woman more than a decade ago, his lawyers brought up other people of interest in the case, including Torey Adamcik.
Prosecutors say Brad Compher murdered Nori Jones in her Pocatello home in 2004, and they are trying to show they have enough evidence to take the case to trial.
On Wednesday, the defense brought up Adamcik, who was found guilty in the 2006 murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart in Pocatello. Adamcik and Stoddart were friends who both attended Pocatello High School, and he was convicted of planning her death and stabbing her 29 times.
Jones was also killed by stabbing. Adamcik, who was 14 years old at the time, lived 50 yards from Jones.
Compher’s defense also asked a Pocatello detective about another person of interest, a man infatuated with Jones who recounted a dream matching Jones’ bedroom. The detective said authorities do not have forensic evidence linking this man to the murder, though he did say it’s possible to kill without leaving DNA.
Earlier in the day, a DNA expert testified he tested two swabs found at Jones’ home. He said a DNA profile was developed for Jones, but some of the DNA on her window didn’t match. Instead, it matched a male. At the hearing a day before, a police officer had testified a window screen on Jones’ window was cut .
Also taking the stand was a Pocatello detective who came to the case in 2013 and was involved in surveillance of Compher’s home. He described getting a cigarette butt from Compher and sending it to the state crime lab to be tested. The defense prevented him from saying what results were, but they came back May 30, 2014.
