Pocatello teen receives President’s Volunteer Service Award

A local high school student is getting some major recognition for the work she does outside the classroom.

Century High School student Angela Forhan was bestowed with the President’s Volunteer Service Award “Gold” Certificate along with a letter from President Barack Obama.

Forhan said when she was initially called to the principal’s office, she thought she was in trouble.

“I was like, ‘Oh, no. What have I done?'” said Forhan.

But when she saw the award, she said she was overjoyed.

“It’s not every day you get one of those, so when I got it, it was definitely pretty awesome. I’m not gonna lie, it was kind of exciting,” said Forhan.

Forhan spends much of her free time volunteering for the Idaho Foodbank as well as serving on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and as president of her school’s Interact Club, which completes service projects.

“Speaking from the other kids, they always know that when Angela comes in, there’s jobs to be done and she will assign those kids things to do,” said Forhan’s teacher, Meg Fleischmann.

Forhan has also raised nearly $3,600 for the foodbank.

“I don’t do service for the recognition, obviously, but when you do get recognized, it’s just a nice thing,” said Forhan.

In order to qualify for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, you must complete at least 500 hours of volunteer work.
