Tapp attorney files for post-conviction relief based on DNA evidence

The Bonneville County Public Defender’s Office has filed a petition to release Christopher Tapp from prison, saying DNA tests will prove his innocence.

Tapp was convicted of the 1996 murder of Angie Dodge and is serving a 25 years-to-life sentence.

This action is based on evidence that was not available at the time of the murder.

The petition, filed Thursday, requests that DNA tests be done on hand swabs that were taken from Dodge immediately after the murder in 1996.

Tapp confessed to the crime, but Tapp’s attorney, John Thomas says his client was coerced into confessing.

“The evidence speaks for itself,” said Thomas. “No DNA evidence has ever connected Chris Tapp to the Angie Dodge murder.”

Tapp has unsuccessfully sought post-conviction relief before.
