Actor, singer, Boy Scout wins this week’s Distinguished Student Award
It may not be a leading role, but Mayor of the Munchkin City is an important one in “The Wizard of Oz”, and Nathan Wilde has enjoyed every minute of his involvement in the show.
“I really love the music of it and the acting,” Wilde said. “Music and acting have always been a great thing. I like being dramatic and overdoing stuff.”
Wilde says the cast has become a close-knit group during this production. He’s also made good friends in other activities he enjoys like soccer and golf. However, one of Wilde’s biggest passions is Boy Scouts. He’s involved in Scouting’s Order of the Arrow program, and he’s worked at Island Park Scout camp for the past five years.
“I felt like I changed,” Wilde said. “That week at my first scout camp was one of the funnest weeks of my life. It’s a really good way to get young boys to be a lot better people. I don’t know where I’d be without scouting.”
As he nears graduation, Wilde has some interesting advice for other students.
“Don’t goof off – OK, goof off, goof off — I goofed off a lot, but make sure you get your work done,” Wilde said. “Do what you have to do because high school is very important for college.”
After graduating from high school, Wilde won’t be following the yellow brick road to Oz.. Instead he’ll be heading to California to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
