Singer and stage hand wins Distinguished Student Award
Sam Young has acquired an appreciation for jazz and loves singing songs of that genre with her choir teacher accompanying her on the piano. But she won’t be doing it at Century High School much longer. She’s graduating in a couple weeks.
“I will miss Century because I love the classes. I love the kids. The teachers are phenomenal, but I’m excited to move on to bigger and better things in life and for me that’s I.S.U,” Young said.
Young plans to study music education at Idaho State University.
“Music just speaks to me very much,” Young said. “I’m the one that sings from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed.”
Young has also discovered an interest in theater.
“I started the stagecraft class here at Century and I did a little bit of everything, from props to costumes to construction, and now I’m on sound and I’ve done a little bit of lights and it’s so much fun to be able to experience all that,” Young said.
Young will be graduating with a 4.0 weighted GPA. When she was younger she worked hard to get good grades because of her parents.
“But now that I’ve gotten here to high school and I’ve kept my grades very high, I’ve worked really hard, it’s opened up from scholarships to programs to be involved in,” Young said.
As Young looks forward to graduation, she also looks back on high school and has this advice for other students.
“Pay attention in classes, pay attention to other people, make relationships,” Young said. “Pay attention in general to what’s happening around you because when you open your eyes to what’s happening, it’s amazing what shows up.”
