District 93 swears in two new board members

Bonneville District 93 will swear in two new school board members on Wednesday: Paul Jenkins will serve Zone 4 and Greg Calder will serve Zone 1.

It’s been a rough few months for District 93, after a bond to build a new high school failed for a third time.

Two new board members are hoping to change that.

“I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who said a house divided cannot stand and I think if we don’t unify and build our district back together we’re going to have some serious long-term problems,” said Paul Jenkins, school board member for
Zone 4.

“I’m very interested in moving past that as quickly as possible. I do think that there are some issues that we as a board need to talk about that have come up there, but I don’t want to spend very much time talking about that. We need to get those resolved and move on quickly,” said Greg Calder, school board member for Zone 1.

Jenkins and Calder are open to hearing ways to solve overcrowding.

“The thing that we need to do is listen and listen very carefully to what people [want] and then weigh those options. There are ideas out there. I think with the intelligence of our community we can find several workable solutions,” said Jenkins.

“There may be other alternatives that we need to reconsider and I’m going into this with a willingness to consider all alternatives to help solve that major problem,”said Calder.

Both said they are excited and ready to start working for the students of Bonneville County.

Meanwhile, the district released a partial school board evaluation for this past year.

According to the evaluation, former board Chairman Annette Winchester missed one meeting, and failed to create a unified and working board to pass a school bond.

Former vice chairman Kip Nelson missed one meeting.

Amy Landers and Brian McBride missed three meetings.

Jeff Bird missed 16 meetings and had four code of ethics violations.

Bird said he does not agree with the ethics violations found in the evaluation.

However, he says he is optimistic that the new board will do great things for the district.

A new board chairman will be selected at the meeting on Wednesday, which begins at 7 P.M.
