District 93 announces plans for another bond to build new high school

Bonneville School District 93 will run another bond in November for a new high school.

The district also says a school isn’t the only new structure that could be built. District leaders say because of recent market value growth with home prices, they could add an auditorium and football stadium and it would cost taxpayers less than the failed bond in May.

The vote came close to midnight Wednesday night, during another marathon meeting. With a proposed stadium and auditorium, the owner of $100,000 home would see property taxes increase by about $3.25 a month.

“We can build the high school and the auditorium for three dollars and 25 cents per hundred thousand per month,” says Dr. Chuck Shackett, superintendent for District 93. “I’m hoping the community will see now is the time to build, it will never be cheaper, take advantage of this market value growth and get more in a high school for less money than it ran in May, so we’re hoping that the community will see that.”

Dr. Shackett says he isn’t concerned about more opposition from the vote no group. He says they have been discredited.

“I hope people will see they’re not being honest, they can never be satisfied because their goal isn’t to create a better environment for students,” says Shackett. “They’re goal is to kill any bond that raises taxes, because if you remember their mantra – too much, too vague, too long, we’ve answered of those questions.”

Dr. Shackett said the cost of the new high school has already gone up by two million dollars since the May bond vote. He hopes those who have campaigned against the bond will drop their opposition so it’s not delayed more.

Dr. Shackett says the option for adding the auditorium and stadium isn’t set in stone. He says the board will decide next week whether to ask for a bond for just a new high school or the option for the school, stadium and auditorium. It is also possible they could add both versions of the bond for a public vote on the November ballot.
